    โœจSk8Arts Academy is moving!

A New Chapter for Sk8Arts is About to Unfold

Weโ€™re growingโ€”and itโ€™s time to give each part of our world the space it deserves.

ArtisticSkating.com will continue to evolve as a global hub for the sportโ€”featuring stories, education, history, and inspiration for skaters everywhere.

At the same time, our in-person training program is stepping into its own spotlight with a new home: Sk8Arts Academyโ€”dedicated to classes, coaching, events, and the vibrant skating community here at the rink.

โœจ Two paths, one shared passion for artistic skating.

To guide you through this transition (and make sure you donโ€™t miss a single step), weโ€™ll be sending a special newsletter on April 15th introducing the new Sk8Arts Academy site, along with what to expect from both platforms moving forward.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Be sure youโ€™re on our mailing list to receive this important update and be part of what comes next.

Because whether youโ€™re skating with us in person or following the journey from afarโ€ฆ
thereโ€™s a place for you here.

Our Annual Spring Showcase is Set!

    โœจ Spring Showcase 2026 ๐ŸŽถ

What happens when rhythm meets wheels?

    Music in Motion

This yearโ€™s Spring Showcase will celebrate the joy, energy, and pure electricity of skating set to music. Music in Motion is more than a theme โ€” itโ€™s the heartbeat of everything we do. When skaters truly listen, their edges soften, their timing sharpens, and movement becomes expression.

And nowโ€ฆ itโ€™s your turn to be part of it.

    ๐ŸŒˆ Who Can Participate?

Intermediate-level skaters are invited to join our featured group production number set to the spirited classic:

    ๐ŸŽต โ€œIโ€™ve Got the Music In Meโ€

This high-energy routine will include a fun, dynamic โ€œfollow-the-leaderโ€ sequence where the entire group moves together in powerful formation โ€” confident, joyful, and absolutely alive on wheels.

To participate in group numbers, skaters should be able to:

    • Skate confidently forward on one foot
    • Execute controlled turns
    • Skate backward
    • Perform simple steps (a plus!)

If youโ€™re not sure whether your skater is ready โ€” talk to your coach. Weโ€™ll help you find the right place.

    โญ Opportunities for Advanced Skaters

More intermediate to advanced skaters may be eligible to perform:

    • Small group numbers
    • Specialty feature numbers
    • Even solos*

*Solo and small group eligibility is determined in consultation with your coach.

We will also feature special performances by local skaters preparing for Regional Championships the following weekend โ€” giving our audience a glimpse of skating at its competitive best.

    ๐Ÿ—“ Show Practice Details

    Tentative start: April

    Fridays | 4:30 โ€“ 5:30 PM

    ๐Ÿ“ El Centro Skate Rink

Attendance at every practice is not mandatory โ€” we understand busy schedules โ€” but all group participants must be available to rehearse group numbers the day of the show.

There is no charge to participate and no admission fee to attend. Bring your family and friends!

Donations will be welcomed to help support our skaters as they prepare for their journey to the National Championships.

Where Do Star Skaters Go After Beginnerโ€™s Class?

    Youโ€™re a Star!

Learning to skate is exciting โ€” but the real growth begins after the beginner phase. When foundational skills are in place, skaters need structure, progression, and purpose to continue improving. Without a pathway, many stall out. At Sk8Arts Academy, our progressive teaching system ensures that every skater knows exactly where to go next โ€” and how to keep building strength, style, and confidence.

    Rink Operator Appreciation Day

Last Chance Dance Skaters Roll Up Their Sleeves

On February 20th, the wheels werenโ€™t just turning on the floor โ€” they were turning in the skate room, too.

Twelve members of our Last Chance Dance Skaters club showed up for a special Rink Operator Appreciation Workday, trading practice time for polish cloths, tools, and a whole lot of elbow grease. Together, we cleaned and repaired rental skates, checked wheels and toe stops, organized shelves, and straightened up the skate room so itโ€™s safer, smoother, and more welcoming for everyone who walks through the doors.

Rental skates are often a skaterโ€™s very first experience on eight wheels. When they roll well, fit properly, and look cared for, it sets the tone for confidence and fun. By helping maintain this equipment, our club members directly support the rinkโ€™s daily operations โ€” and the families, schools, and new skaters who rely on it.

This day was about more than tightening trucks and wiping down boots. It was about gratitude. We are fortunate to have a home for artistic skating, and we believe in being good partners. When we invest in the rink, we invest in the future of our sport.

Twelve volunteers. Countless rentals refreshed. One very grateful skating community.

Service is part of who we are โ€” on the floor and off. ๐Ÿ’™โœจ

A Good Day at the Skating Rink

    “C’mon, Dad!”

He came to watch his kids skate.

He left with a grin on his face and a quiet victory over fear.

Sometimes the most powerful moments at the rink donโ€™t happen in the spotlightโ€”they happen in rental skates, on shaky knees, when someone decides to try.

Read how one dadโ€™s first lap around the floor became a reminder of why we do what we do.

๐Ÿ’– Thank You for Rolling with Us

A Closing Note from Linda & Kayla

As we wrap up this monthโ€™s focus on Strong Foundations, weโ€™re reminded that foundations arenโ€™t flashy. Theyโ€™re not the big jumps or the spotlight moments. Theyโ€™re the quiet repetitions, the wobbly first attempts, the courage to try again, and the simple joy of rolling forward one more time.

Every edge you strengthen, every posture you correct, every fall you learn to recover from โ€” these are the bricks that build your skating future.

But foundations arenโ€™t just technical. Theyโ€™re relational. Theyโ€™re built in encouragement, shared laughter, patient coaching, and the courage to step onto the floor โ€” whether itโ€™s your first time or your fiftieth year on wheels.

We are so proud of the work weโ€™ve seen this month. The determination. The breakthroughs. The willingness to go back to basics and do them well.

Strong foundations donโ€™t just support advanced skating โ€” they support confidence, resilience, and lifelong joy.

Keep building. Keep listening. Keep showing up.

Weโ€™ll see you on the floor.

With gratitude and belief in you,

โœจFebruary’s Theme: Skate from the Heart

February at a Glance: Short Month, Full Heart

February may be the shortest month on the calendar, but weโ€™re packing a lot of heart into it.

A quick heads-up as you plan your skating time: El Centro will be closed February 16โ€“20, giving us a brief pause mid-month โ€” and a perfect opportunity to connect, give back, and skate a little differently.

This monthโ€™s theme, Skate from the Heart, invites us to slow down, listen more deeply to the music, and rediscover the joy and expression that drew us to skating in the first place. Youโ€™ll see that theme reflected throughout our classes, events, and community activities this February.

    โœจ Whatโ€™s coming up:

    • A special Monday Meetup at Lynnwood Bowl & Skate on February 16, where weโ€™ll join Howard Jenkinsโ€™ Skate Therapy session for a refreshing, feel-good skating experience
    • A chance to give back with a Skate Room Cleanup Day during the closure week as we show appreciation for the rink and the space that supports our skating community
    • Our monthly Skate Swap on the last Thursday of the month โ€” a great time to pass along gear and pick up something new-to-you
    • Andโ€ฆ a BIG ANNOUNCEMENT coming soon about our Spring Showcase (you wonโ€™t want to miss this one ๐Ÿ‘€)

Below, youโ€™ll find more details on each of these โ€” along with a closer look at what weโ€™re exploring in class this month as we learn to feel the music, style our movement, and skate with intention.

February may be brief โ€” but itโ€™s full of meaning.
Letโ€™s skate it from the heart. ๐Ÿ’œ

Olympic Trials: Figure Skating on Wheels

Every four years, the world pauses to watch athletes glide across the iceโ€”edges carving clean arcs, spins floating effortlessly, music and movement woven together into moments of pure artistry.

What many people donโ€™t realize is that the same skills theyโ€™re watching in Olympic figure skating are taught and trained right hereโ€”on roller skates.

This February, while the Olympics are on our screens, weโ€™re inviting you to experience that artistry firsthand with a special program weโ€™re calling Olympic Trials.

    What Are Olympic Trials?

Unlike the elite Olympic Trials you see on television, our Olympic Trials are personal.

Theyโ€™re a low-pressure opportunity to try Artistic Roller Skatingโ€”no commitment, no experience required, and no pressure to โ€œsign up for everything.โ€ Just a chance to see what it feels like to skate with intention, technique, and music.

    As we like to say:
See it on ice. Learn it on wheels.

    The February Olympic Special

For the three weeks weโ€™re open in February, weโ€™re offering a special Olympic Trials bundle:

Social Skate + Class for $25
    (a $10 savings)

This experience pairs a guided daytime Social Skate with a structured Artistic Skating class, giving you time to warm up, explore movement, and then learn how the fundamentals really workโ€”edges, balance, turns, flow, and musical interpretation.

    Whether youโ€™re:

    • a recreational skater curious about classes
    • an adult returning to skating after years away
    • or someone whoโ€™s watched figure skating and thought, โ€œI wish I could do thatโ€

    โ€ฆthis is your invitation.

We’re also inviting you to our Wednesday Sk8Skills 1 & 2 Classes from 3:30 – 4:30 pm for just $15 (a $5 savings!). Give it a Trial and see what Class suits your skating level and style.

Why February Looks a Little Different

You may notice weโ€™re keeping February intentionally simple. The rink will be closed February 16โ€“20 for floor resurfacing, and rather than rushing the launch of our new Passport training system, weโ€™ve chosen to use February as a trial and discovery month.

    That means:

    • No long-term commitments
    • No pressure to choose a pathway yet
    • Just time to roll, explore, and enjoy skating

Our full Sk8Arts Passport programsโ€”with structured monthly plans and clear pathwaysโ€”will officially debut in March, once weโ€™re back on a freshly resurfaced floor and can offer a full, uninterrupted month.

    Everyone Starts Somewhere

Every Olympic skater youโ€™re watching right now began with a first edge, a first turn, a first attempt.

Olympic Trials are about that beginning.
    Your beginning.

If youโ€™ve ever been curious about Artistic Skatingโ€”or wondered what makes figure skating so captivatingโ€”February is the perfect time to step onto the floor and try it for yourself.

๐Ÿ›ผ Olympic Trials โ€” February Only

๐Ÿ›ผ Olympic Skating Games on Wheels

    Family Friday โ€ข February 13 | 11:00 AM โ€“ 1:00 PM

While the world is watching Olympic figure skating on ice, weโ€™re bringing the excitement to the roller rink with Olympic Skating Games on Wheels โ€” a special Family Friday event inspired by the grace, skill, and celebration of the Olympics.

Skaters of all ages and levels will take part in fun, skill-based skating games designed to highlight balance, rhythm, edges, spins, and presentation โ€” all adapted for roller skates. Whether your skater is brand new, home-schooled, preschool-aged, or already rolling strong, everyone is welcome and included.

To make the experience truly Olympic, weโ€™ll be awarding Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals at a real podium, complete with Olympic music โ€” giving every skater the thrill of standing on the podium and feeling like a champion. Events will be offered for multiple levels and ages so every participant has a chance to shine.

This is not about competition or elimination โ€” itโ€™s about participation, confidence, and joy in motion. Think of it as:
See it on ice โ†’ Try it on wheels.

Coachโ€™s Corner – New Blog Post

From the Coachโ€™s Heart: My Life on Wheels

Roller skating has been part of my life since I was two years old. I quite literally grew up on the skating floor, surrounded by music, movement, competition, and community. Over the years, skating has carried me through childhood, performance, teaching, family life, and more than a few reinventions.

In this personal reflection, I share how a lifetime on wheels has shaped not just the skater I becameโ€”but the teacher, mentor, and person I am today. From early rink shows and competitive skating to building clubs, teaching families, and returning to the floor later in life, skating has been a constant teacher.

But perhaps the most important lesson is this: Iโ€™m still learning.

My students continue to teach me as much as I teach themโ€”about courage, patience, musicality, perseverance, and joy. Skating isnโ€™t something you outgrow; itโ€™s something that grows with you. And I hope this story offers a glimpse of how skating can become a lifelong companion, shaping confidence, creativity, and connection long after the music starts.

This is the story behind why I teach the way I doโ€”and why the skating floor will always feel like home.

๐Ÿ’– Thank You for Rolling with Us

    ๐Ÿ’™ A Note as We Closeโ€ฆ

As we wrap up this month, we just want to say thank youโ€”for showing up, for supporting one another, and for bringing your unique energy onto the floor each week.

In our recent blog, Skate from the Heart, we talked about listeningโ€”to the music, to our bodies, and to each other. That idea carries us through everything we do here. Progress doesnโ€™t come from perfection; it comes from presence. From skating with intention, curiosity, and joy.

Whether youโ€™re just beginning, returning after time away, or finding new confidence in your skating, know this: what you bring to the floor matters. We see it. We appreciate it. And weโ€™re honored to skate alongside you.

Thank you for being part of this community and for sharing the heart of your skating with us.

โœจJanuary’s Theme: It Starts With a Beat

January is where we begin again – not with tricks, not with speed, but with something far more essential.

    A beat.

Every great skating moment – every clean edge, confident turn, expressive dance phrase, or powerful jump – starts with timing. Before style, before difficulty, before polish.. there is rhythm. This month at SK8Arts Academy @ El Centro, our January theme is “It Starts With a Beat,” and we’ll be exploring timing, tempo, and musicality across all of our classes.

Whether you’re gliding your very first patterns, dancing to music you love, or sharpening technical skills… the beat is your best inspiration and teacher!

Debbie Berg is one of those rare mentors whose rhythm stays with you long after the music changes. Debbie will be guest teaching some of our classes, and will also be available for private lessons. Please help us welcome Debbie to Sk8Arts Academy!

Coachโ€™s Corner – New Blog Post

    Who Did You Take From?

Among โ€œold skaters,โ€ itโ€™s a question that carries history, respect, and lineage. But what does it really mean to take from a teacherโ€”and what does it mean to give? As we step into a new year, this reflection explores the quiet exchange between teachers and students, legacy and learning, and the gifts we carry forward long after the lesson ends.

    The Skaters Have Spoken!

๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿ›ผ Last Chance Dance Skaters Club Update โ€” New Leadership Elected!

Our skating community took a big step forward on November 20th as the Last Chance Dance Skaters Club held its first organizational meeting โ€” and we are thrilled to announce the election of our inaugural officers:

    • Bri Sevores โ€” President
    • Justine Briley โ€” Vice President
    • Rosita Mayo โ€” Secretary/Treasurer

This dynamic trio will be working together throughout December to prepare the Clubโ€™s Mission Statement and By-Laws, setting a strong foundation for the future. With their leadership, weโ€™ll be ready to hit the ground rolling in January, when the Club will officially file its 501(c)(3) nonprofit application.

    Why This Matters

Becoming a nonprofit organization gives the Club the ability to support the sport of Artistic Skating in the ways our local members choose โ€” whether thatโ€™s helping skaters attend competitions, offering scholarships, improving equipment, promoting special events, or creating more opportunities for our community to grow.

It also means the Club can host fundraising activities such as:

    • Skating shows & exhibitions
    • Bake sales
    • Skate-a-thons
    • Community events
    • And more โ€” all benefiting the goals decided by the membership

This is a huge milestone for our skate family and a beautiful example of what happens when skaters come together with vision, energy, and heart.

Stay tuned โ€” 2025 is going to be a remarkable year for the Last Chance Dance Skaters!

โœจ JOY IN MOTION โ€” December’s Theme

As we roll into the heart of The Big Dark in the beautiful PNW, our rink (El Centro Skate Rink in Federal Way, WA) becomes a bright spot in the weekโ€”a place where movement brings warmth, connection, and that unmistakable spark of joy. This yearโ€™s guiding theme, The Joy of Skating, reaches its fullest meaning now, as we find light not from the sunโ€ฆ but from each other, from the music, and from the simple magic of wheels in motion.

This month, weโ€™re celebrating how joy grows when we move with intentionโ€”through the beautiful basics, the Art of Plain Skating, and every breakthrough that makes skating feel effortless and expressive.

    Joy in Motion

Hereโ€™s a glimpse of the message that opens our December season:

โ€œJoy isnโ€™t something we wait for. Itโ€™s something we create every time we show up, glide forward, and let movement wake us up from the inside out.โ€

This special social skate is for families with children, and our focus is fun learning games and music selected for the young ones.

๐ŸŒˆ December’s theme: Joy In Motion

โœจ What to Expect in Classes This Month! โœจ

December may be a short month for classes, but weโ€™re filling every minute with what matters most: JOY. Not the perform-it-perfect, toes-just-so kind of joyโ€ฆ but the real kind. The kind that comes from moving your body, laughing with friends, discovering new rhythms, and doing those quirky little moves that feel amazing โ€” even if the mirror (or the photos) tell another story.

You know the moment: you lift your leg into a glorious, sweeping spiralโ€ฆ the wind in your hair, the music swellingโ€ฆ
And then someone shows you the picture and โ€” well โ€” your leg was apparently only 3 inches off the ground.
    But did it feel fabulous?
    Yes.
And thatโ€™s exactly the spirit weโ€™re embracing this month.

๐Ÿ’ซ Feel-Good Skating All Month Long

Weโ€™ll explore the movements that make your body say โ€œooooh yesโ€ โ€” the stretches, the flowing edges, the silly-but-satisfying wiggles, the powerful pushes, the little hops and swizzles that wake up your imagination. Whether theyโ€™re technically โ€œcorrectโ€ or not, if they bring you joy, theyโ€™re in the mix this month.

๐ŸŽถ Skating to New Tempos & Styles

Weโ€™ll also play with music in a big way:

    • Fast songs, slow songs, dreamy songs
    • Ballroom, pop, classic rink favorites
    • And even a few surprisesโ€ฆ

Weโ€™ll take some familiar dances weโ€™ve been practicing all year and try them to completely different music โ€” and suddenly, everything changes. Itโ€™s a beautiful way to discover flow, personality, and confidence on the floor.

    ๐Ÿ›ผ Daytime Classes: A Year-in-Review

Both Sk8Groove and Sk8Artistic daytime classes will spend December revisiting every dance weโ€™ve worked on in 2024. Think of it as a joyful rewind โ€” a chance to remember how far youโ€™ve come, how your edges have smoothed out, how your posture has lifted, and how your confidence has grown.

Weโ€™ll also be preparing some special takeaways for the
Joy of Skating Workbook โ€” 2025 Edition, including:

    • Steps weโ€™ve mastered
    • Dances weโ€™ve completed
    • Reflections on joy, momentum, and growth
    • A few inspiration pages to carry into the new year

    ๐ŸŽฉ๐Ÿฅง Grand Finale: GRAND MARCH + โ€œTies & Piesโ€ Social

Weโ€™ll close out our December classes with a festive Grand March, followed by a โ€œTies & Piesโ€ Social hosted by our Last Chance Dance Skaters Club. Bring a fun tie, your best pie, your family, or your friends โ€” and get ready for laughter, photos, and plenty of sugary cheer.

This Monthโ€™s Theme: Joy in Motion

    Itโ€™s not about perfection.
    Itโ€™s not about comparison.
Itโ€™s about remembering why we skate in the first place:
Because it feels good to move. Because it feels good to belong. Because it feels good to glide.

And that joy? Itโ€™s already in you.
Letโ€™s skate it out together. ๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ›ผโœจ

๐Ÿ† Building Our Future: The El Centro Artistic Team Judges Panel

Behind every great skater is a great judge.
This fall, the El Centro Artistic Team is proud to introduce its new Judges Panel, a dedicated group of skaters and teachers training to become certified judges for the RSA Achievement Tests and USARS competitions.

Led by Kaydee Mounce, an experienced judge, referee, and tabulator, the group meets Fridays at 1:00 PM to study scoring systems, judging ethics, and how to fairly and clearly evaluate the skaters whoโ€™ve worked so hard to master their skills.

โ€œJudging is more than just scoring,โ€ says Mounce. โ€œItโ€™s about recognizing the hard work and heart each skater puts into their performanceโ€”and helping them see their progress clearly.โ€

All El Centro Artistic Team members are invited to join these sessions to learn what judges look for and how the testing system works. Successful candidates will be certified to judge at local Test Centers and can go on to train for regional and national events through USARS and AARS.

  • โ˜€๏ธย Fall 2025 – We’re Back!

๐ŸŒˆ October Update: A Little Late, but Worth the Wait

Itโ€™s true โ€” this โ€œOctoberโ€ update is arriving a little fashionably late! Between teaching, preparing for the new season, and learning the ins and outs of all the new website tools Holli so beautifully built, itโ€™s taken me longer than expected to get everything in motion. Iโ€™m finally taking the time to understand each piece of the system โ€” from payment modules to scheduling tools โ€” so I can use them effectively from here on out.

Thank you for your patience while I get my digital skates under me again. This update will help keep everyone informed about whatโ€™s happening both at the rink and online at ArtisticSkating.com, and Iโ€™m happy to say that after a busy few weeks, classes are settling back into our โ€œback to normalโ€ rhythm (whatever that means for skaters!).

    ๐Ÿ›ผ A Note About Sk8Arts Academy & ArtisticSkating.com

As our community grows, itโ€™s time to start distinguishing between the two sides of our world:

ArtisticSkating.com is our online home base โ€” where weโ€™ll be building a national (and eventually international) hub for artistic roller skating: articles, videos, testing programs, and community news.๐ŸŒˆ

Sk8Arts Academy is our in-person teaching program โ€” the classes, shows, and coaching that happen right here at the El Centro Skate Rink.

For now, both live here together on this site, but over the next few months, youโ€™ll start to see a clearer separation between the two as we prepare to launch dedicated spaces in the new year.

    ๐ŸŒ About ArtisticSkating.com

ArtisticSkating.com is the online home of our growing skating community โ€” a place where skaters, teachers, and fans of all ages can connect, learn, and be inspired. Here youโ€™ll find resources designed to support every stage of the artistic skating journey: from skill tutorials and testing opportunities to stories that celebrate the people and history behind our sport.

Our goal is to build a vibrant national (and eventually international) hub that shines a light on the art, athleticism, and heart of roller skating. Whether you skate in a local rink, a small-town club, or a backyard driveway โ€” you belong here.

    ๐Ÿ›ผ Welcome to Sk8Arts Academy

Weโ€™re happy to share that Sk8Arts Academy at El Centro Skate Rink is open, thriving, and rolling full speed ahead into the new season! With classes, performances, and training opportunities for skaters of all ages and levels, our Academy continues to grow into a vibrant hub of creativity and connection.

As we head into the 2025โ€“2026 season, weโ€™re building on the strong foundation weโ€™ve created together โ€” expanding our programs, strengthening our teaching team, and preparing our skaters for testing, show performances and competitive opportunities ahead. Whether youโ€™re joining us for the first time or returning to continue your journey, thereโ€™s never been a better time to lace up your skates and become part of the Sk8Arts family.

๐Ÿ’– Thank You for Rolling with Me

Iโ€™m so grateful for everyone whoโ€™s been part of this growing community โ€” both on and off the rink. Your encouragement keeps me going through the late nights, the learning curves, and the occasional โ€œoopsโ€ moments. Thank you for your patience and for believing in this journey as we keep building something truly special together.

See you at the rink (and online, too!)
    ~ Coach Linda

    ๐Ÿ›  A Note About Construction
El Centro Rink is currently finishing some exciting renovations, which means there may occasionally be construction activity during the early part of the day. Work is scheduled to end by 2:00 PM, so our afternoon and evening classes should run smoothly. Still, we may need to adjust or cancel some morning programs on short notice if the work interferes with skating. Weโ€™ll keep our website and message board updated with the latest information, and we appreciate your flexibility as we roll through this transition together.

    New Classes!

๐ŸŒŸ Sk8Stars โ€“ Shine on the Artistic Path

    Thursdays 4:30 – 5:30 PM

For advancing artistic skaters ready to take center stage.
Sk8Stars is designed for skaters who have mastered the fundamentals and are ready to refine their technique, musicality, and performance quality. This class focuses on the artistry and precision that define competitive and show skating โ€” including advanced edges, turns, spins, jumps, dance sequences, and presentation skills.

Students in Sk8Stars train alongside others who share a passion for expression and excellence. The program includes guided skill development, performance choreography, and preparation for testing or competition. Whether your goal is to challenge the RSA Test System, perform in showcases, compete at local and national competitions, or simply explore your artistic potential, Sk8Stars helps you build confidence, strength, and stage presence worthy of the spotlight.

๐ŸŒŸ New Sk8Skills Class: A Family-Friendly Next Step in Skating!

    Wednesdays 3:30 – 4:30 PM

Weโ€™re excited to announce our Wednesday Sk8Skills Class, designed as the perfect bridge for skaters who have completed our Saturday Beginnerโ€™s Classโ€”or anyone whoโ€™s ready to move beyond the basics!

In Sk8Skills, skaters of all ages come together in a fun, family-friendly environment to build confidence and strengthen fundamentals. Skaters should already be comfortable rolling forward, balancing, starting and stopping, and knowing how to fall and get back up safely. From there, our program helps them grow step by step.

The journey doesnโ€™t stop thereโ€”graduates of Sk8Skills advance into Sk8Stars, where they are introduced to the exciting world of traditional artistic skating disciplines, including dance, freestyle, and figures.

Whether youโ€™re a child, teen, or adult, Sk8Skills is the place to grow together, celebrate achievements, and discover your skating potential.

    ๐ŸŒŸ Sk8Lab – Experiment, Explore, Elevate!

    Tuesdays 4:30โ€“5:30 PM
Step into Sk8Labโ€”our guided practice session for skaters ready to experiment, explore, and elevate their skills! This supervised training time blends independent practice with targeted coaching, break-out sessions, and collaborative exploration of technique, musical interpretation, and partner skating. Perfect for skaters with testing, performance, or competitive goals, Sk8Lab helps you develop strong training habits and discover what works best for your unique skating style.

๐Ÿ’ซ Sk8Passes โ€“ Your Ticket to Progress and Savings!

Choose your path and save big with our Sk8Passes โ€” convenient monthly subscriptions designed for every kind of skater. Each one-day-a-week pass gives you unlimited access to your chosen program: Sk8Groove Pass (Tuesdays), Sk8Artistic Pass (Thursdays), or Sk8Aspire Pass (Tues/Thurs 4:30โ€“5:30 PM). Each is just $120 per month, offering significant savings over walk-in pricing. Want it all? The All Access Pass lets you attend every class, every social skate, and every practice session, plus enjoy exclusive member perks โ€” all for $225/month. All passes renew automatically each month, so your skating momentum never stops!

๐Ÿš€ NEW~ Sk8Aspire Path: Take Your Skating to the Next Level

For skaters ready to dream big, the Sk8Aspire Path provides the training and guidance to unlock their full potential. This path combines Thursday Sk8Stars Class with Tuesday Sk8Lab sessions for a well-rounded, progressive experience.

We’re also happy to continue our popular Sk8Passes for the Tuesday and Thursday programming:

Sk8Stars introduces skaters to the foundation of traditional artistic skating disciplinesโ€”dance, freestyle, and figuresโ€”building on the fundamentals mastered in Sk8Skills. With structured lessons and inspiring choreography, this class helps skaters step into artistry while continuing to sharpen technique.

Sk8Lab is where that training comes to life. These supervised practice sessions include break-out groups focused on specific skills, so each skater can zero in on what they need mostโ€”whether itโ€™s edges, turns, spins, jumps, or dance steps. With coaches guiding the process, skaters get individual attention in a supportive, structured environment.

And our ALL ACCESS Passes are still a favorite for skaters that want to take advantage of all our program has to offer: All Tuesday, Thursday and Friday events are covered, including all private practice hours from 2 – 4 PM, all Classes, and all Social Skates. Need more info, or ready to take the plunge? Click here:

  • โ˜€๏ธย 2025 SUMMER SEASONย ๐Ÿ˜Ž

August Skating News from Coach Linda & Team

    Hey Yโ€™all!
Hope youโ€™re soaking up this gorgeous Pacific Northwest summer! ๐ŸŒž

We wrapped up a fun and very productive National Championships in Reno, then took the scenic route homeโ€”up the coast, sand in our shoes, and zero thoughts of skatingโ€ฆ for about three days. Then, of course, I started thinking about skating again. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Nationals Reflections
Huge congratulations to all the skaters who participated in the USARS Competitive System this seasonโ€”especially our local stars who showed up, skated hard, and gave it their all.

To me, competition isnโ€™t about beating others or proving somethingโ€”itโ€™s about performing your best under pressure. Being judged after months of training is one thing, but stepping out for the first time ever takes courage, confidence, and a leap of faith. Bravo to everyone who keeps striving to be their bestโ€”you are the only judge that matters!

    August: The โ€œOff-Seasonโ€ That Isnโ€™t

Traditionally, competitive roller skaters take August off to decompress, heal, and recharge before the September season kick-off. But honestly? By mid-August, I start missing the motion, the music, andโ€”most of allโ€”the people!
So this year, weโ€™re sprinkling in some August meetups. No expectations. No pressure. Just rolling with friends, reconnecting with the community, and soaking in the joy of skating together

    Summer Skating Meetups

Fri, Aug 8 El Centro Skate Rink 5:30 โ€“ 8:30 PM: Open session fun!
Wed, Aug 13 Lynnwood Bowl & Skate 6 โ€“ 8 PM: Groove night vibes
Wed, Aug 20 Marysville Skating Rink 11 AM โ€“ 1 PM: Midday skate break
Sun, Aug 24 T Point Ruston (The Dunes) 2 โ€“ 5 PM: Outdoor skate! (Tentative)
T = tentative dateโ€”watch for confirmation on the website and socials.

๐Ÿ“ New post: โ€œTo Help – Or Not to Help: That is the Skating Questionโ€ โ€” A thoughtful (and slightly funny) take on rink etiquette.
Weโ€™ll post again by Aug 25 with the Fall Schedule and details about the daytime program start date.
Until thenโ€”stay cool, stay safe, and keep rolling!

Well, friendsโ€”if youโ€™ve ever done a home remodel, you know how this story goes. As often happens with projects of this size, construction is running behind schedule, and it may be mid-to-late September before our Daytime Program can officially roll again.

But donโ€™t worryโ€”weโ€™ll stay in touch, and Iโ€™ll post updates as soon as I have them.

    In the Meantimeโ€ฆ

While the hammers and drills are busy at the rink, Iโ€™m busy behind the scenes, working on fresh tutorials and new class plans for the upcoming season.

    Nationals Results

    Nationals 2025 โ€“ What a Week! ๐Ÿ†

We are so proud of all our local skaters who represented our community at the USARS National Championships in Reno. You all brought heart, skill, and a whole lot of style to the floor!

    Spotlight on Kayla Burns

A HUGE congratulations to Kayla Burns of South Gate Skating Club for earning the Bronze Medal in Silver 1 Figures! ๐ŸŽ‰ Kayla also made the finals in her Creative Solo event and became a true crowd favorite with her high-energy Las Vegas routine (yesโ€”thatโ€™s the same one you might remember from our Spring Showcase).

    First-Timers Making Big Impressions

For Justine, Patrick, Ellen, and Hayley, Nationals was not just their first time on the big stageโ€”it was their first competition ever! All four skated admirably, earning solid scores and warm appreciation from the audience. Way to set the bar high for your future events!

    Mavisโ€™s Incredible Journey

One of our favorite skaters, Mavis, faced some unexpected travel drama when Alaska Airlinesโ€™ delays caused her to miss her figure event. But she wasnโ€™t about to let that stop herโ€”she made the drive from Seattle to Reno in time for her Dance event. Huge thanks to Rosita, Sandy, and June for making sure she got there just in time!

    Fans in the Stands

We were thrilled to spot Pam and Loyd cheering from the sidelinesโ€”what a surprise! Maybe next year weโ€™ll see them on the floor instead of in the stands. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    A Coaching Dream Team

An enormous thank you to Lona Denis and Sue Logghe for their coaching assists. I truly couldnโ€™t have done it without you both!

Till next yearโ€ฆ Keep Rolling! ๐Ÿ›ผโœจ

  • What’s Happening This Week:

    Where has the month gone???

Almost half the year has floated by like a cloud, and yet we’re still looking up — seeing visions of roller skates sliding through the moves we’ve been working so hard to master! If you’ve been dreaming of landing that elusive turn or maneuver, we’re here to help make those dreams a reality.

What’s your summer plan? We hope you’ll carve out time to skate with us at El Centro Skate Rink – whether for fun, fitness, or that little break from the unpredictable summer weather. Rain or shine, the rink is here to keep you rolling!

What’s on tap for Classes this week?

This week, our classes spotlight SHARP TURNS AND DEEP EDGES, and finds examples in our favorite dances and skills moves. We’ll review some foundational skills and add some new twists (literally) that’ll have you eager to show off your progress!

Both groups will focus on edging techniques, with the GrooveSk8 Class building on last week’s lessons in cross-overs onto an edge, while the Artistic Expressions skaters will refine edging precision in the dances we’re prepping for our upcoming SPRING SHOWCASE.

Want your skating to look polished and dynamic? It’s all about learning how to LEAN and AIM – and we’ll help you master both!

    2025 Spring Showcase: CARNIVAL!

Don’t forget our 2025 SPRING SHOWCASE is happening at El Centro Skate Rink on June 10th (Tuesday) from 5 – 6:30 pm, with a special ROLLING THROUGH THE YEARS exhibit of roller skating memorabilia generously provided by our legacy skaters from as far back as 1956. We’ll also be recognizing the skaters and volunteers that have made our brand new program such a success during our inaugural year with a special AWARDS PRESENTATION to honor some very deserving recipients.

Our Class and Competitive skaters are working hard to perfect their routines for the Showcase, then they’re off to Portland to compete at our Regional qualifying competition the very next weekend. We’d love to have you come experience either (or both!) of these events that celebrate our skaters’ hard work in achieving the skills to perform at a high level on a National stage. (*It’s not too late to join in the fun and be a part of our Showcase performances! See Linda or Patrick if you would like to join in a group number or the Grand March.)

    NW PACIFIC REGIONAL COMPETITION

    When? June 14 – 15th

Where? The Oaks Park Rink, Portland, OR

2025 marks the inaugural year of El Centro Artistic Skating Team’s participation in this prestigious competition to determine the skaters who will represent the Region at the USARS National Championships in Reno, NV in July. Please join in wishing these hard-working skaters GOOD LUCK in their efforts to make the cut in order to bring their skating skills to the National skating floor! The skaters representing El Centro are Linda Sewell, Javier Aragon, and Justine Briley. To these skaters, along with all of the talented competitors from the PNW Region… SK8 GR8!!!

    SUMMER SCHEDULE

We’re also unveiling our SUMMER SCHEDULE with just a few small changes to the regular lineup. The Summer Season for in-person classes at El Centro will now start at 11 am with our regularly scheduled Social Skates on Tuesdays and Thursdays, followed by our popular Groove Sk8 Class on Tuesday and the Artistic Expressions Class on Thursdays from 1 – 2pm. The early 10 am Advance Groups for each of these classes will be paused through the summer, but we’ll combine the advanced and basic groups from 1 – 2 pm in order to focus on some fundamentals and review of basic skills through the summer months.

Our new FUN FAMILY FRIDAY Social Skate every Friday from 11 – 1 pm will combine our 10 – 11 am SkaterTots with the Home Schooler’s Recess Social Skate. While school is out, we’d like to invite our non-home schooler friends to join us for this inclusive, FAMILY FRIENDLY session centered around the younger skaters and their parents and siblings. The format is suitable for skaters as young as 2, and children under 7 are free with the admission of a sibling or parent.

Just a note; we don’t provide snack bar service or game center operation during our social skates in order to maintain the focus on learning to skate with special games and activities that build skating skills. For this reason, we also don’t provide the Skate Mate trainers during this skating session. Our Rolling Ambassadors and Coaches are available to assist new skaters, and we also allow parents to walk the rink with their children for added support.

Summer is here – make time for skating!

Whether you roll outdoors or prefer a smooth indoor session, El Centro Skate Rink is the place to soak up some laid-back summer vibes while refining your skating goals.

Join us, bring a friend, and make the most of the season – one stride at a time!
