Finding Your Skating Style
Class Summary week of 03/25 – 03/27/25
We’re introducing the concept of STYLE in your skating this week! This is such an important – and FUN – subject for me to teach, because my mission is to bring my students the tools to interpret music and create a personal style in their skating for both traditional dance as well as contemporary recreational skating. We’ll explore how simple moves of a free leg or shoulder position can change the look and feel of the step, and we’ll put some steps together to create a practice drill for those positions that will increase your confidence in performing these styling options and add more JOY to your skating!
- Tuesday GrooveSk8 I & II: We’ll work on inside edges and explore how changing the position of the free leg and stroking at an angle can result in more confident footwork. You’ll also learn some new steps for the “old” 2-step, using those inside edges with a back-and-front rocking cross step that will give you more speed and deeper edging for your recreational dance skating fun. .
- Artistic Expressions Groups: Our traditional dance groups will work on stroking from the Angled “and’ position when stroking inside-to-inside edges. We’ll also work with free leg positions to interpret the flavor of the dance, and learn a 3-position free leg in a 6-count swing segment of the “Sway” ChaCha (Linda’s original dance last competitive season). And there’s some additional fun surprises with a slinky inside-edge sequence with some arm and hand options.
This series is just the start of a month-long, in-depth exploration of finding your own style in your skating. Whether you prefer to make it up as you go, or skate the exacting steps of traditional dance skating, you’ll find some moves and grooves to make your skating YOUR OWN!
See you on the floor!
